A representative sample is a sample of data believed to represent the entire population. If a sample is representative, it does represent the entire population, then the sample has the same characteristics as the population.
In statistics, it is important that a sample of data be representative. If a sample of data is representative, correct inferences can be drawn by analyzing the sample.
